Thanks for the comments. Obviously all wines have their off days and I’m sure if tasted again they’d probably come out in a slightly different order. I love the fleshy ripe styles but they need freshness and life. Some manage it really well [Troplong always seems too] others try too hard and just end up messing it up. I was really surprised by Beau-Sejour Becot – not sure whether that was in your line-up. La Gaffeliere [as opposed to Canon La Gaff] never does it for me – am I missing something? Cheers

Jeremy I tasted these the week before last in the States and with 3 hours only got to about 60 wines total but was sure to hit all wines, sometime twice, that were of personal and purchase interest for me. We are fairly similar in our assessment with a few swaps between your level 1 and my level 2. Troplong Mondot, Pavie Macquin, and Canon Lagaffeliere were tops for me. Figeac was not showing well, I have loved this wine from literally every vintage I have ever had, its a no score for me to be tried again. Cab sauv in the C. Lagaf gave it a nice extra tannic beam of structure on all the lush fruit, Mondot and Macquin being neighbors and have lots of limestone soils are nice twins. I also think that Macquin 10 blows the doors off their 2009.

In fact I rarely cellar bordeaux these days. I used to up until around 1990 when the overripe character of the vintage just put me off on those wines. I shifted towards chateauneuf du pape, because grenache holds up better in warm, dry years. But warm years have given rise to more and more scorching drought years, and by now overripe rhone reds are finally putting me off on the high-end chateauneuf wines too — I’m the guy loading up in years like 2001 and 2005, while everyone else seems to be running after 2007 and 2009 and 2010. (I do buy some of those, just less than I used to) But as it happens, you tasted quite a few wines that I used to drink and cellar back in the 1980′s and early 1990′s. So I know the wines and your comments on them are pretty evocative. And I still sometimes order Bordeaux at restaurants or from wine bars that have interesting choices. But not if I think the vintage has the characteristics of 1990 — which is why your TNs are helpful. You happen to have tasted the right wines, from my perspective, and they weren’t overripe and hot. For example I’ve always been a big fan of La Conseillante and Beauregard (and Margaux, but who can afford that these days?). And my father in law was absolutely hooked on Canon for ages (and Lynch Bages, La Lagune). But even he eventually found those too heavy for his palate.
